Benefits of Outdoor Summer Concerts

How are summer concerts good for you?

One of the greatest enjoyments every June into August in Iowa is attending the Music in the Garden summer concerts at the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden.

This one-of-a-kind outdoor venue may not feature large acts and massive stages, but it provides a more intimate experience supporting a wide variety of local musicians everyone knows and loves, a chance to hear new bands, and a great space to groove.

What are some key benefits that come with these concerts?

Naturally Beautiful Spaces

Our outdoor venue offers the enjoyment of nature along with great music. Feeling a gentle breeze as you enjoy a bluegrass band, or watching the sky colored with reds, oranges, and purples as the sun sets during a rock show. You can’t beat the sensory experience of a live outdoor concert.

No Assigned Seating

Another perk: enjoying the music in a way that you are most comfortable. Our concerts are on the open grassy field of the Koehn Lawn. This gives you the freedom to choose where you want to stand, or sit in your own folding chair, or even lounge on your own picnic blanket.

Freedom to Dance, Wiggle, Walk Around

Live music outdoors offers the freedom to move around. Get closer or go further away. While it’s still a shared communal experience, allowing you to move about freely, chat with other concert goers, or even just get up and dance when you feel the rhythm in your bones, you can choose to have a more or less immersive evening.

Family Friendly

Open-air concerts are incredibly family friendly, because they give kids the space they need to be kids. If they get tired of watching musicians, they can keep themselves entertained by finding other kids to play with or looking for bugs in the grass. Families can visit Nature Play while still hearing the music, and can leave for bedtime without disturbing other concert goers.

Everything You Need for the Best Night Ever

As fun as outdoor concerts are, being prepared is always a great plan. Here’s a list of essentials to bring for whatever Mother Nature decides to throw into the show:

  • Sunscreen
  • Bug repellent
  • Sunglasses and hat
  • Blanket or folding chairs
  • Umbrella/poncho
  • Earplugs/Ear Covers
Music in the Garden is Right Around the Corner!
