Lighting Up Holiday Nights

Displays of holiday lights in public venues are a popular part of the annual celebration of the season. The displays utilize twinkle lights in many ways, including decking towering Christmas trees in public squares, street trees and park trees, adorning lampposts and other such structures, decorating significant buildings such as town halls and department stores, and lighting up popular tourist attractions such as the Eiffel Tower, the Sydney Opera House, and now the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden!

A familiar pastime during the holidays is to drive or walk around neighborhoods in the evening to see the lights displayed on homes. A few have made it to the Extreme Christmas TV Specials shown on HGTV, at least one requiring a generator! Today it is estimated that more than 150 million light sets are sold in America each year, with more than 80 million homes decorated with holiday lights.

While our light numbers are not that extreme (nor our energy use), the Botanical Garden’s Dome for the Holidays display will make for magical memories for your family because everything is indoors in our conservatory. This means you can unwrap your scarf, take off your coat and enjoy your time strolling through our lush, urban oasis while you discover a garden of ‘des’ lights from butterflies, to flowers to cascades of color. Imagine a friendly climate nestled in a midwestern snowscape. A place where your pace doesn’t have to be hurried because of the cold. Where everyone and anyone can have a good time all together.
