Hot Glass ‘Heats Up’ the Garden Experience

Baby, it’s cold outside, but inside at the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden, you have the opportunity to see more than just the natural beauty of its tropical oasis. Running through the end of March, “Hot Glass” from Iowa Artist Joel Ryser takes center stage with a new installation adorning the conservatory.

Art Makes The Garden More Vibrant

“As the cold weather takes over, the Botanical Garden becomes a warm, tropical escape,” said Kim Perez, president and CEO of the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden. “We are thrilled to have Joel’s art on display to add yet another enriching element of discovery and enjoyment to the Garden. Whether you’re joining us for a class, visiting for the day or attending one of our many special events, we’re excited to share this wonderful addition with our guests.”

Glass Art is Cool

“Hot Glass” adds color, pattern and shape to the botanical landscape through the use of cane and murrine glass techniques. Davenport-based artist Joel Ryser has perfected the art of glassblowing and now uses his talents to create stunning pieces for indoor and outdoor use. “Hot Glass” will be on display — and items will be available for sale — through March 30. Just scan the QR code at each piece to find out more details. All purchases will be made directly with Joel Ryser of Hot Glass Inc. Contact him at 563-265-9079 or [email protected]. Work can also be seen at hotglassart.org. “Hot Glass” Inc. is a recognized 501(c)3 educational organization; proceeds from sales provide tuition-free glassblowing classes for at-risk youth and veterans.

Art Work that Does Good Works

“Hot Glass” is more than just incredible art sculptures. They focus on the good works of the “Hot Glass” mission designed to provide youth and Veterans with a life changing experience working with glass. These ‘students’ develop essential skills including teamwork, communication, planning and decision-making, as well as specific job related applications. Most importantly, they learn that they have the responsibility, and the power, to shape their own futures by participating in these “Hot Glass” programs. All of the youth and Veteran programs are tuition-free; these are funded through grants, schools, and corporate funds.

Hot Glass Supports So Much

“Hot Glass” also offers a variety of classes, corporate team building events, seasonal events, and annual sales to supplement operating costs. All proceeds from these classes and events are used to fund the programs. The goal is to become the premier center for the advancement of glass art for the Greater Quad City Region with a one-of-a-kind facility providing people of all ages (but particularly youth and Veterans) the opportunity to experience and enjoy glass art.

Exhibit is included with general admission. You can pre-purchase tickets online here or buy them at the door. Or you can also enjoy the art while attending Dome After Dark on Friday Nights from 6-10 pm or Botanical Blues on Sunday afternoons from 1-4 pm.
