Unpacking Comfort, Confidence, and Accessibility at the Botanical Garden

The Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden is a peaceful indoor oasis where visitors can slow down, connect with nature, and recharge. While many experience the Garden as calming, we recognize that public spaces can feel overwhelming for individuals with sensory sensitivities.
That is why we offer free sensory backpacks in Des Moines, available anytime the Garden is open, including during events. Whether you are visiting on a quiet weekday or during a lively program, these tools are designed to help you feel more comfortable and confident as you explore.
Simply ask for a sensory backpack at the front desk when you arrive.
Sensory-Friendly Tools for All Visitors
Our sensory backpacks are part of our ongoing commitment to accessibility and inclusion. Each backpack includes thoughtfully selected items that can help reduce stress, improve focus, and support self-regulation for visitors of all ages and abilities.
While often used by children, these tools can benefit anyone who prefers a more supported and flexible Garden experience.

Expanding Accessibility: Sensory Tours
Every visitor experiences the Garden differently. While sensory backpacks provide flexible, self-guided support, we are expanding our accessibility offerings even further.
Beginning November 1, 2026, the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden will introduce Sensory Tours. These private, guided experiences are designed for groups who would benefit from a structured, sensory-friendly exploration of the Garden.
Creating an Inclusive Garden Experience
Small changes can make a meaningful difference. By offering sensory-friendly resources and experiences, we aim to ensure every visitor feels welcome, supported, and able to enjoy the beauty of nature in a way that works best for them.

Families can explore with added confidence

Groups can engage through guided sensory tours

Whether you are visiting for the first time or returning to your favorite space, accessibility remains at the heart of what we do.
