June 2023 Youth and Family Programming

Summer is on its way and the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden has summer programming for you and your children! Pot a plant, make tasty salsa, and attend a story time! Learn about and register for our Youth and Family programming below.

Join us for this fun, interactive story time tailored toward children ages two to five that explores nature and plants. During each program, participants enjoy stories and an activity based on the week’s theme. Included with admission. That means members are free! Become a member today.

A terrariums that looks like a glass house with dirt, plants, and sea shells inside. Terrariums for Teens | Thursday, June 15, 5:30-6:45 p.m.

Join us as we merge plants and science to create your own miniature world. In this hands-on workshop, learn basic design techniques and how to care for your terrarium. All ingredients are provided (gravel, rocks, soil, plants, moss, lichen, and container) to put your terrarium together. This workshop is designed for youth ages 12 to 18. After the class, enjoy complimentary admission to our summer concert series, Music in the Garden.

A variety of succulents in their own ceramic pots that people can pot up to take home. Succulent Potting Bar | Saturday, June 24, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

Learn about the adaptations of desert plants and take one home. Choose from a variety of succulent plants and learn how to pot one up like a professional. This drop-in style activity allows you to work at your own pace. Walk-up registration only. Available while supplies last. Admission to the Garden is not included.

Salsa, and salsa ingredients such as lime, pepper, tomato, onion, and cactus for families to make together. Family Workshop: Cooking with Cacti | Tuesday, June 27, 5:30-6:45 p.m.

Have a budding chef at home? Learn how to prepare and incorporate these prickly plants into several tasty dishes. This workshop is designed for youth ages 5 to 14 and an accompanying adult to build a take-home project together. One adult is required for every three youth participants.
